Winning by Losing by Winning

Sometimes, you’ll do your absolute best, and still get shit on.

There are tests you’ll pass with flying colors and extra credit. Then to congratulate you, the proctor will punch you in the face ’till you don’t know which way is up.

Some people will hate you down to the fiber of your being, and won’t ever tell you why.

You can turn the other cheek, but there are only two. Well, four if you’re into butts. When all your cheeks are bruised beyond recognition, then what?

You can take the higher ground, whatever that means. Just remember, the highest ground in hell is in a crack of a sidewalk in heaven.

You can fine tune your beliefs and plug in all the affirmations you know. You can tell yourself that everything happens for a reason, and it’ll all make sense someday. You can wax poetic about the sweet not being sweet without the context of the sour. You can forgive others for not knowing what they do. And the ones who know what they do? You can remind yourself that everyone is the way they are for a valid set of reasons.

But sometimes, none of that matters.

Sometimes, you need to feel sorry for yourself, you know, for being such a misunderstood saint.

Sometimes, you need to inflate your humility with pride and helium, and watch it yap all big and bad in a chipmunk voice.

Sometimes, you might need to break something.

Eventually, you’ll need to let it all go.

Let what go?

Everything. Let go of the need for control. Let go of the need to be right. Let go of the need to be liked. Let go of the need for fairness. Let go of all your demands.

Take in a deeeeeeeeeeeep breath. And let it all goooooooooooooooo.

Because when life craps on your chest when you were expecting a trophy, you can dwell on the injustice of it. Pout and fester and scream.

And/or dust yourself off, let go, and move on.

I am the last person in the world to defer to a phrase like, “You can’t win ’em all.”

You can win more of ’em than you think, probably.

But sometimes, the way to win is by not playing.

Sometimes, the way to win is to lose.
